Students each plucked a leaf to add to our basket of harvested produce. Each leaf was carefully washed, spun dry, and made into a lettuce wrap with cheese and sliced chicken inside by students.
Students enjoyed a snack made of fresh lettuce leaves right out of our garden. The interesting thing about this garden is that the lettuce grew from discarded soil that was removed from garden plots and placed in a side yard. We practically ignored this area but, with the wonderful rains we have had this winter, the lettuce happily grew. Students each plucked a leaf to add to our basket of harvested produce. Each leaf was carefully washed, spun dry, and made into a lettuce wrap with cheese and sliced chicken inside by students.

Meet David - we are helping him make a good start in life by keeping him safe from predators. UPDATE: Friday, March 24th we set him free in our garden. Note the two dots on his wings in the last photo. That is how we know he is a boy butterfly.
Our focus this meeting was to learn about Worm Composting. Nadia W., daughter of volunteer Ms. Silvia, shared her knowledge of worm composting with the students. She showed them her families worm container farm and we passed out instructions on how students could make their own worm farm. For fun, students snacked on pretend worm compost and worms (dry cereal mixed with gummy worms)! We also planted some pretty pansy flowers, a tomato plant, and some cilantro with the help of Lilly's dad, volunteer, Mr. Rios. Spring is almost here. Butterflies were the focus of our meeting today. Volunteer, Ms. Silvia, shared some information about the butterfly cycle and brought some caterpillars that will turn in to Monarch Butterflies. We planted donated Milk Weed which the caterpillars love to eat. We were also to learn that Vintage was awarded the Whole Foods Garden Grant by the Whole Food Foundation. More to come about this later. |
