During today's activity, we learned about helping plants by adding fertilizer. We learned about the 3 numbers that are on fertilizer packing. The first is N for Nitrogen (good for plant growth). The second is P for Phosphorus (helps roots grow, flowers bloom, fruit production). The third number is K for Potassium (good for helping plants withstand various stresses, such as heat, cold, pests, and diseases). We then took a Dixie Cup partially filled with an all purpose fertilizer and walked about school sprinkling fertilizer around the base of the plants. We look forward to seeing the plants respond to our TLC.
Today was Year Book Picture Day so we did an activity that wouldn't get our nice clothes too dirty. Garden Club members love to get down and get dirty!! The 4th Grade Garden Club held their 1st meeting of the school year on Monday, September 21. This meeting fell the Monday after a school beautification day (last Saturday, Sept. 19th). A lot of cleaning up of the garden and garden plots took place on Saturday so this gave the garden club a jump on cleaning up after the long summer.
We had a large, enthusiastic group of 4th grade Garden Club members who helped finish cleaning out plots. Still others helped shovel mulch into buckets to be spread elsewhere. Another group helped plant plants and added worms to our Butterfly Garden section to help feed and house butterflies as they reproduce and migrate. It always is amazing how much we get done in our weekly meetings. A big thanks to parent volunteers, Ms. Lisa, Ms. Carolyn, and Ms. Silvia. With their participation, we are going to be doing great things related to gardening this year. Check out the Memories Albums (under Memories menu above) for more photos! |
