The Pacific Region Garden Clubs, Inc. in cooperation with the Southern California Garden Club joined Vintage Students in planting a tree outside the main office. Members of the 4th Grade Garden Club enjoyed showing them what they have done so far this year in the Vintage Gardens. The Southern California Garden Club gifted Vintage's garden program with a generous check to keep our gardening efforts going. Sugar snap peas to eat fresh off the vine! They are one of our favorite things to grow. They are easy to grow, grow in the winter when there is rain, fun to pick right off the vine, and yummy to eat. We also are planting some spring flowers and are enjoying the sweet smelling Fresias that have popped up. Dutch Iris Bulb Planting The awesome thing about gardening in Southern California is being able to have colorful flowers year long. Today we planted some Dutch Iris bulbs. We also enjoyed the Sweet Peas (different than the Sugar Snap Peas we can eat). They self planted and from past year's plants. The are lovely to look and and smell. Part of gardening is to clean out the old debris and make room for the new growth. There has been a ton of leaves falling into the garden from surrounding trees. The 4th Grade Garden Club is working hard to clean out all of the old plants and leaves. Just look at all those trash bags filled in our 20 minute recess break.
4th Grade Garden Club members were busy tucking onion bulbs into the raised garden beds. Last year, the onions did well. We look forward to seeing them grow this year. Today we set up potting stations to plant Alyssum, Coleus, and Sweet Pea seeds. We hope to take advantage of the rains to keep the seeds watered. January through April are often our rainier months. Students added some begonias which should brighten the planters located on the west side of the school near the Densmore Street entrance. We didn't get time to plant these yesterday. It is hard to not getting the planting urge when the sun shines and warms the grounds. We had fun planting lots of vegetables such as tomatoes, green peppers, cauliflower, carrots, beets, cilantro, parsley, and more. There is still a lot of cleaning up to do in the garden. A never ending up task but one the student gardeners enjoy. They love getting their hands into the dirt. They also love seeing the garden shape up. Soon we will be on Winter Break. Before we leave, Vintage's 4th Grade Garden Club did an awesome job freshening up the planter outside of Vintage's Library. They added fresh red bark donated by Home Depot. |
